CHELSEA HAVE SIGNED DANNY DRINKWATER FROM LEICESTER CITY.
Chelsea have signed midfielder Danny Drinkwater from Leicester in a last-gasp deal believed to be worth £30million.
The Blues' failed in their bid to take Ross Barkley from Everton with the England man changing his mind after completing a medical.
But they have secured the services of Drinkwater, 27, who was Champion with Leicester two seasons ago.
Leicester announced the fee is a club record sale for them as Chelsea secured the England international on a five-year deal.
The move reunites Drinkwater with N'Golo Kante, who he formed an irresistible partnership with as the Foxes won the Premier League in 2015-16.
Drinkwater said: "I’m delighted to be a Chelsea player and can’t wait to get started.
"It has been a long journey to get here but I am very happy and am looking forward to helping the club win more trophies."
The Foxes said: "Leicester City wishes to express its gratitude to Danny for his contribution to the team’s achievements over the past five years, as he leaves with the best wishes of everyone at the Football Club."
Drinkwater asked for the move to Stamford Bridge and was desperate to join the Premier League champions.
The Manchester United academy graduate hopes to impress both domestically and on the continent in a bid to force his way into Gareth Southgate's World Cup plans.
Drinkwater is the sixth signing of the summer for Chelsea, along with Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Alvaro Morata and Davide Zappacosta.
Blues technical director Michael Emenalo said Drinkwater would prove "invaluable" as the champions look to turn their title defence around.
"He is a typically combative English midfielder with a cultured passing technique and his arrival significantly strengthens our midfield options," he said.

CHELSEA HAVE SIGNED DAVIDE ZAPPACOSTA FROM TORINO.
Chelsea have signed Davide Zappacosta from Torino in a £23m deal reports the Mirror.
The Italy international will provide valuable cover for Antonio Conte at right wing-back after losing out to Liverpool for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in a £40m move.
Conte gave the 25-year-old his first international call-up ahead of Euro 2016, though he failed to make the final cut for the tournament.
Zappacosta is an excellent crosser of the ball as he helped bring out Andre Belotti's aerial prowess, assisting him several times in his 26-goal season.
ROSS BARKLEY SHOCKS CHELSEA BY DECLINING TO JOIN THE BLUES DURING HIS MEDICALS.
Ross Barkley pulled out of his move to Chelsea after having second thoughts during his medical.
Everton midfielder Barkley was at Chelsea's Cobham training ground undergoing his assessments after the two clubs agreed a fee reports the Mirror.
A deal worth £30million was set to be completed in the final moments of Deadline Day.
But Barkley decided against the move while he was on the treatment table and has instead opted to remain at Everton.
Chelsea could yet make a move for Barkley in January, after feeling that the England international might need time.
Everton majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri told Sky Sports News: "Technically he will be with us because he's under contract for another year.
"It is a bit of a surprise but that's football."
It is yet another blow for Chelsea, who also missed out on the signing of Fernando Llorente to Tottenham during the final day.
However, a deal for Torino right-back Davide Zappacosta is agreed , despite not yet confirmed.
WILFRED BONY RETURNS TO SWANSEA.
Nothing official from the club yet, but Wilfried Bony has posted a picture of him signing a contract at Swansea on his Instagram, saying he’s “excited to be back home”.

FERNANDO LLORENTE IS UNDERGOING A MEDICAL AT TOTTENHAM .
Spurs appear to have won the race for the Fernando Llorente's signature ahead of Premier League champions Chelsea, who also remain interested.
Target man Llorente, 32, had appeared set for Chelsea and a reunion with his former Juventus boss Antonio Conte at Stamford Bridge.
But Spurs' late move could looks set to see him head to north London in what would be another transfer setback for Conte who has also missed out on Romelu Lukaku and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain this summer.
Llorente joined Swansea last summer and bagged 15 goals in 28 league starts to help the Welsh side stay up.
And he will provide Premier League ready back-up for star man Harry Kane, something that has been a priority for boss Mauricio Pochettino this summer.
Swansea are willing to let Llorente go providing they have a replacement and have lined up former striker Wilfried Bony for a return from Manchester City.
KYLIAN MBAPPE FINALLY JOINS PSG ON LOAN.
Paris Saint-Germain have signed Kylian Mbappe on loan, with a staggering £162million option to buy next summer.
The French giants have sent waves around Europe this summer after signing Neymar from Barcelona for £199m.
Earlier in the summer, Mbappe looked set to join Real Madrid, while Arsenal and Manchester City were also interested.
But the 18-year-old has decided to remain in France and move back to his hometown club, where he will stay until the summer of 2022 'when' the option to buy is exercised.
Upon completing his switch to the French capital, Mbappe said: "It is with great joy and pride I join Paris Saint-Germain.
"For any young person from the Paris region, it is a dream to wear the red and blue jersey and to taste the unique atmosphere of the Parc des Princes.
"I was attracted by the project of the club, it is one of the most ambitious in Europe.
Along with my new teammates, I intend to continue my progression today while helping the team to achieve the very big objectives it has set itself."
PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi added: "It is with a lot of emotion and satisfaction that I welcome Kylian Mbappé to the Paris Saint-Germain family.
"It was essential for French football that we keep and help develop such a great talent in our championship.
"Among players of his age, he is without doubt the most promising in the world due to his immense technical, physical and mental qualities.
"Since his emergence at the highest level, he has earned an excellent reputation as a young talent who is very respectful, open, ambitious and already very mature.
"Under our colors, in the midst of truly great players, Kylian will continue his progression in a way that will also benefit the French national team in the months and years to come.
"With his arrival, more than ever, our supporters will have plenty to cheer about."
A statement from Monaco said: "Kylian Mbappé joins Paris Saint-Germain on a season-long loan with option to buy. The club wish him all the best."
Mbappe came to prominence last season as Monaco reached the semi-finals of the Champions League.
The club have already sold Benjamin Mendy and Bernardo Silva to Manchester City, and Tiemoue Bakayoko to Chelsea.
Arsenal and Barcelona remain interested in midfielder Thomas Lemar.

LIVERPOOL HAVE AGREED A DEAL TO SIGN CHAMBERLAIN.
Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
Arsenal have been demanding £40m and Liverpool now expect to complete the deal before deadline.
A six-year deal has been reportedly agreed with the player, and a medical could take place this evening at St George's Park - where he is currently training with England ahead of their World Cup qualification double-header.
However, Oxlade-Chamberlain has permission to miss the England squad's flight tomorrow to Malta if he needs more time to complete the switch.
The Reds have beaten champions Chelsea to the transfer in what is a remarkable coup for manager Jurgen Klopp.
Chelsea are fuming over Oxlade-Chamberlain’s snub, as they had a deal agreed and yet the Arsenal midfielder chose to go to Anfield.
Chamberlain has been rumored to have snubbed the Blues because he might be used in the wing back position; a position where Arsenal Manager - Arsene Wenger played him in some of the games last season.
The England star preferred a switch to Liverpool where he would play midfield and believes he can improve and develop his England career.
He told Arsenal he would not sign a new deal, turned down an offer of £180,000-a-week and can leave on a free transfer next summer.
PETR CECH HAS CONCEDED LESS IN ARSENAL.. IGNORE THE FALSE STATS!!!
Petr Cech is arguably one of the greatest goalkeepers to have graced the premier league. As such making up some false news about a player of such statues is simply ridiculous.
Yes, he now plays for Arsenal. A team presently in a patchy form.
Obviously, when the Gunners are in bad form, then anything which piles on the pain is usually good for businesses such as this one.
But the fact remains that being accurate on such a delicate matter is what matters most to us here.
Which brings us to a story currently doing the rounds about Petr Cech.
In the wake of Arsenal's 4-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, a statistic suddenly started appearing on social media claiming that the Gunners goalkeeper had now - or was just about to - concede more goals for his current team than his previous one, Chelsea.
It was shared and retweeted thousands of times in various forms, and given that he's been at Arsenal for just three years, and was at Chelsea for 11, it is a fairly incredible claim.
But also a completely false one.
How reasonable does it sound that Cech who played 11 years for Chelsea conceded less goals in 494 games than the 92 he has conceded in just two seasons with the Gunners?
Tom Ede, who works for stats gurus Opta, was on hand to end the madness when he tweeted that Peter Cech has conceded over 300 fewer goals for his current team than his former one - 89 for Arsenal and 392 to Chelsea, which is pretty much what you'd expect given his time at both clubs.
So next time you think about hitting the retweet or share button, just think a first, OK!
THE SUPER EAGLES HAVE INTENSIFIED PREPARATIONS AHEAD OF THEIR WORLD CUP QUALIFIER AGAINST CAMEROON
The Super Eagles players have held their first training session ahead of 2018 World Cup qualifying clash against Cameroon.
All the invited players including Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi, Ahmed Musa, Ogenyi Onazi, Odion Ighalo, Elderson Echiejile, William Troost-Ekong, Kelechi Iheanacho, Wilfred Ndidi and 15 others took part in the training session on Tuesday evening.
Nigeria will host Cameroon, the reigning African champions at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo, on Friday before flying to Yaounde for a return leg on Monday, September 4th.
Super eagles captain John Obi Mikel is well aware of the threat their Camerounian counterparts pose ahead of their crucial double header against them.
The former Chelsea midfielder who has been to two World Cup finals spoke to FIFA.com about Friday's opponents:
"As everyone knows, they are a very good team,” he said of Cameroon. “They are strong and they play with confidence.
We must get ourselves well prepared for this game and try our best to get on top against them.

OLIVIER GIROUD ADMITS THAT CHANGE IS NEEDED IN ARSENAL.
Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud has admitted that Sunday's thrashing at Liverpool left him feeling "ashamed" and he believes changes are needed at the club.
The Frenchman came on as a second-half substitute at Anfield alongside his compatriot - Lacazette but the duo were unable to prevent the 4-0 drubbing, which has seen the pressure again rack up on Arsene Wenger.
Giroud, who was linked with a move away from the club this summer most notably to Everton has been talking about the emotional scenes following the Anfield clash.
"I was ashamed when I left the pitch against Liverpool. We have to change something," he told France-based radio station RMC.
"I have decided to stay. It's my choice, even if everyone does not understand it.
"I still want to win the Premier League here."
Giroud comments come amid growing disillusionment from the players at the club, as Wenger's future again comes under spotlight following a poor start to the season which has seen them lose two in a row following their opening day win over Leicester.
The Gunners could weaken the more as England midfielder Alex Oxlade Chamberlain looks set to join either Liverpool or Chelsea. The future of Alexis Sanchez in North London still remain unclear, with Manchester City again moving for the forward ahead of Thursday's deadline.

MCGREGOR WILL RISE ABOVE RONALDO IN THE LATEST FORBES RICH LIST.
Conor McGregor will rise above Cristiano Ronaldo in the latest Forbes rich list for athletes after banking more than £77m in his knockout defeat against Floyd Mayweather reports the Mirror.
The Notorious was stopped in the 10th round in Las Vegas but was already a winner before the first bell thanks to the record-breaking hype that generated up to £500m.
Ronaldo topped the list this year with earning of £71m, but the Real Madrid star will drop down after McGregor career-high pay day.
"You [Ronaldo] were number one on the Forbes list, I was like number 35 or something," McGregor said in a meeting last year.
"I'll get up. Maybe next year I'll get you."
"I don't think so," said the Portuguese star.
Despite leapfrogging the No.1 earning athlete, McGregor will not assume the throne, with Mayweather's £233m purse putting him back atop of sport's money-makers.
The list is calculated by adding together salaries, bonuses and endorsements, which include sponsorships and appearance fees.
Any tax or agent fees are no counted, while those not active in the last 12 months are removed, hence Mayweather's absence this year.
If Mayweather keeps true to his word, then McGregor could top the rankings in a year's time by maintaining his earning power both inside the boxing ring and back with the UFC.
ARSENAL FANS ATTACK CHAMBERLAIN'S POP STAR GIRLFRIEND ON INSTAGRAM.
As you might know already, Arsenal's Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain is on the verge of a £40m move to Chelsea , with the two clubs having agreed a fee.
With Oxlade-Chamberlain clearly feeling that he needs to start a new chapter in his career after seven years, and Arsenal hardly setting the world alight at the moment, plenty see the switch as a logical one for the player and both clubs.
But some Arsenal fans have taken to trolling Oxlade-Chamberlain's pop star girlfriend Perrie Edwards ahead of the move.
The Little Mix star is getting snake emojis plastered all over the comments section of plenty of her Instagram posts, especially those featuring her boyfriend.
Comments such as "you're dating a snake" regularly appear from angry supporters, and there are also comments targeting Perrie with personal abuse.
Fans of the star have been hitting back though, with one comment from a user called "besideperrie" saying: "what the hell is wrong with some people? Perrie is not the reason that Alex leaves Arsenal, this is his choice and you should have some respect."
Oxlade-Chamberlain's move should be completed before the closure of the transfer on 11pm on Thursday.
"RYAN GIGGS WILL BE WORTH £2b IN THE PRESENT MARKET"; SAYS KEANE.
Brazilian star Neymar joined PSG from Barcelona for a world record fee of £199 million.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho claimed that was “not expensive” because of the commercial gains the French giants would make.
But at the same time, Mourinho feared it would drive up the price of ordinary players to eye-watering levels.
Asked today what the players he soldiered alongside would be worth now, Keane said: “Ruud (van Nistelrooy) would be worth a billion. Beckham, a billion. Giggsy, two billion.”
And Roy Keane? “3.75 million,” he laughed, the then British record fee that Manchester United paid Nottingham Forest for in 1993.
Keane continued: “It’s mind-boggling, it really is. The figures out there now for players, it’s not the player’s fault, it’s the market, the market value of players. It’s mind-boggling.
“Especially for the average players. If ever there’s a time to be a professional footballer, it’s now - average players are going for £35m. My goodness.
“The really brilliant players are going for big money. When average players are going for £30m-£40m, it does make you scratch your head.”
During an interview with Daily Mail in 2014, Roy Keane expressed his regret at taking part in a documentary in which he picked his greatest Manchester United XI from former team-mates, and left out Ryan Giggs in his squad.
The Cork man spent 12 years at Old Trafford and was captain of the side which won the historic Treble in 1999.
ROY KEANE'S UNITED XI
GK: Peter Schmeichel
RB: Paul Parker
CB: Gary Pallister
CB: Jaap Stam
LB: Denis Irwin
RM: David Beckham
CM: Paul Ince
CM: Roy Keane
LM: Cristiano Ronaldo
ST: Eric Cantona
ST: Ruud Van Nistelrooy.
'That programme is not something I'm entirely happy that I've done,' Keane said. 'Whether people liked it or not, I felt uncomfortable picking my best XI.
'I felt embarrassed leaving players out. I feel like I disrespected my teammates. And if you asked me to name my best XI now, well I wouldn't do it, first of all.
But if I did, there'd probably be three or four changes.'
SAM ALLARDYCE HAS SAID THAT HE DOES NOT WANT ANY JOB NOW
Sam Allardyce has claimed it is a “little hasty” for him to return to Premier League management.
But the former England boss declined to rule out a return to football as he admitted he is only on a “break” from the game.
Allardyce has been linked with a comeback at Crystal Palace with Frank De Boer under pressure after three opening defeats without scoring a goal.
The former West Ham and Newcastle boss quit the Selhurst Park job in May and said he was going to retire after saving the club from relegation.
Asked if he would be interested in the job, Allardyce told talkSPORT: “Any club at this early stage of the season wouldn't be of any interest to me at the moment.
"I have been relaxing this summer. I have just had a trip to Hawaii, just watching afar. Went to watch Manchester United on Saturday.
“I wouldn't associate myself with any job at this moment in time. Three games in to the Premier League.
It is a little hasty when people start talking about you coming back into football or me personally.
“At this moment in time, I am very comfortable in my life. My time in the Premier League over many, many years has been tremendously exciting and I have enjoyed every minute.
But taking a break out of football at that time was the right thing for me to do.
I am just watching Premier League football with great interest and watching how it is panning out.
"And not living under the great pressure that every manager in the Premier League is living under today.
And those pressures are gettting bigger and bigger because of the size of the money, the size of the transfers, the size of the wages.”
Allardyce was paid a £2m bonus for keeping Palace up last season – but he would have to repay that sum if he took another job within two years of leaving the South London club.
And he called for Dutchman De Boer to be given more time as his successor.
“Do I have sympathy for Frank De Boer? Yes absolutely,” he said.
"All managers who don't start the Premier League very well, speculation evolves almost immediately.
And of course the pressures of the job and the expectations for every club starting this season.
"Time is of the essence. You have got to try and find whoever is down there – West Ham are down there at the moment as well – find the right solution with the players that you have got to get the club going. One win can trigger you going into another.
“If you look at Stoke last season, I think it was seven or eight games before Mark got his first win on the board and then they finished in one of their highest places in the Premier League.
“It is early days. I think people need a little bit of patience. It will obviously worry those clubs but they all have to work together to try to get it right.”
VIRGIL VAN DIJK HAS BEEN SPOTTED AT LIVERPOOL AIRPORT.
One rumour that has never disappeared all through this summer has been Virgil van Dijk's move to Liverpool.
It was back in early June that the Reds were forced to issue a grovelling apology to Van Dijk's club - Southampton for what was perceived as an illegal approach for the Dutch defender.
There has always been a belief that the deal would get done eventually, despite Southampton not wanting to lose a sixth player to Liverpool in three years.
The Dutchman is seen as the answer to Liverpool's defensive problems, and Reds fans have been craving his signing all summer.
And on Tuesday afternoon, those same fans got very excited.
According to the Mirror, Fan Dean Coombes suggested that a private jet arrived at Liverpool Airport from Bournemouth, with what was believed to be a Liverpool club car on hand to pick the passenger or passengers up.
Fans then rushed to a flight-tracking site to back this up.
The jet was reported to be a Cessna 525B CitationJet CJ3, which appears to be the same aircraft that Van Dijk posted this cryptic tweet from when his move to Liverpool broke down in June.
To add further fuel to the fire, it was then claimed that he was picked up by the same type of car that ferried Jurgen Klopp, Mohamed Salah and Andrew Robertson from the airport when they flew in to sign their Liverpool deals.
Now we'll work hard with our reporters to bring you news about whether or not all this is true, but for now we'll glory in just how excited all of this has got Liverpool fans.
A day after the Reds secured the signing of Naby Keita for next season, and as they also bid for Monaco's Thomas Lemar, Reds fans are beside themselves.
MBAPPE HAS PASSED HIS PSG MEDICAL AHEAD OF HIS LOAN MOVE.
Kylian Mbappe has reportedly passed his Paris Saint-Germain medical ahead of his loan move to the Ligue 1 giants.
In a bid to get round Financial Fair Play rules, PSG will loan Mbappe this season before signing him next summer for £166million reports the Mirror.
According to French broadcaster TF1, Mbappe had his medical at Clairefontaine, where he is currently training with the national team.
PSG have now bought the two most expensive players in history by following the £199m purchase of Neymar with the £166m deal to sign the French teenager from Monaco.
But the fee for Mbappe will not be payable until next summer to avoid UEFA rules designed to stop over-spending.
It brings into question the use of FFP – and the competitiveness of Ligue 1 this season after PSG have obtained the best player off last season's champions.
Manchester City, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all interested in signing Mbappe. But he was born in the Parisian suburb of Bondy and wanted to return to the French capital.
Monaco did not want to sell – especially to another Ligue 1 club – made it clear PSG would have to match Real Madrid's offer of €180m.
The deal was thrashed out on Saturday with Monaco declining attempts by PSG to include the transfers of Lucas, Javier Pastore or Julian Draxler.
So the deal will see PSG loan Mbappe this season with a non-obligatory option to buy for £166m next summer.
The Paris club did the same by loaning Serge Aurier 2014 from Toulouse in 2014 before finalising the deal in 2015.
PSG, like Manchester City, had to agree a deal with UEFA in 2014 after breaking the rules .
The Qatar-backed club's finances have always been controversial as they are sponsored by Dubai-based Emirates and the Qatar Tourism Authority.
When Neymar was unveiled by PSG, president Nasser Al-Khelaifi said:
"I don't think it is expensive as I am sure we are going to make more money than we paid.
Anyone thinking about FFP I tell them: 'Go have a coffee and don't worry about us, we are in good hands'.”
Transfers are amortised over the lengths of their contracts – so Neymar's transfer fee and wages are spread over five years.
But even so, PSG still need to offload players now to balance the books with Tottenham having agreed to sign Aurier subject to the Ivory Coast defender obtaining a work permit.
The Mbappe deal will not go on PSG's books till the financial year 2018/19 now – and UEFA's monitoring of finances a year behind.
FFP was introduced to stop clubs spending more than they earn – with clubs only allowed to make a small loss of £4.6m.
The rules have been diluted to allow owners to spend an extra £28m of their own money over three years.
UEFA official Andrea Traverso, who is in charge of FFP regulations, told L'Equipe: “If a club breaks or is found to have failed to apply the rules several times in a row, of course, the previous offences will be taken into account.”
Penalties include fines, reducing the number of players eligible for the Champions League – or ulimately exclusion from UEFA competitions.
MIKEL OBI JOINS, IHEANACHO, MUSA, AND OTHERS IN SUPER EAGLES CAMP IN UYO AHEAD OF WORLD CUP QUALIFIER AGAINST CAMEROON.

Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, is among the 16 players that have reported to the team’s camp in Uyo as at Monday's evening, ahead of Friday’s 2018 World Cup qualifier against Cameroon.
Ogenyi Onazi, Daniel Akpeyi, Ikechukwu Ezenwa, Dele Alampasu, Ola Aina, Mikel Agu and Ahmed Musa have also arrived camp.
Others are Odion Ighalo, Tyronne Ebuehi, Oghenekaro Etebo, Elderson Echiejile, Chidozie Awaziem, Kelechi Iheanacho, William Troost-Ekong, and Wilfred Ndidi.
The players still expected are Victor Moses, John Ogu, Anthony Nwakaeme, Leon Balogun, Aaron Samuel, Uche Agbo and Moses Simon.
Arsenal youngster Alex Iwobi will miss both legs of the qualifiers due to injury.
The Eagles will hold an open training on Tuesday, while the sessions for Wednesday and Thursday will be behind closed doors.
Earlier in the month, Super Eagles captain - John Obi Mikel stated that he's confident that Nigeria will qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia.
Although Africa's third round of qualifying only reaches its halfway point at the end of this month and beginning of September, the Super Eagles captain believes a place at the global finals is within their grasp.
Group B , in which Nigeria are already four points clear of second-placed Cameroon and five ahead of Zambia and Algeria, certainly makes for pleasant reading.
And though four tough games have still to be negotiated, Mikel is upbeat about their prospects of topping the table and claiming the section’s sole spot at Russia 2018.
"We are in a very good position in our group," the 30-year-old Tianjin Teda midfielder told
FIFA.com .
"We have two wins from two games, and in our last game we beat Algeria at home.
We have a very good young team and the players play good football. If we can win our next match (at home to Cameroon on 31 August) it will edge us closer to qualification. I think we can go through."
For the former Chelsea star, the pressure to make it to Russia is immense.
And as he explained, that is not simply due to the expectations of supporters in his football-mad homeland. "My wife is Russian,” he said, “and many of our relatives and friends are from Russia.
They are all expecting Nigeria to qualify for the next World Cup. I think they will kill me if I fail them," he added, laughing.
For all his confidence, Mikel is under no illusions that the remainder of Nigeria’s campaign will be easy.
Looming large, after all, are back-to-back meetings with reigning African champions Cameroon, who have drawn both their matches thus far.
The Super Eagles captain knows that these meetings on 31 August and 4 September will go a long way towards deciding the group’s outcome.
"As everyone knows, they are a very good team,” he said of Cameroon. “They are strong and they play with confidence.
We must get ourselves well prepared for this game and try our best to get on top against them.
It won't be easy but these are important matches. If we win both, we will be almost there.”
As might be expected given his role as captain, Mikel has figured prominently in Nigeria’s qualifying campaign thus far.
Notably, he scored one and set up for another in their most recent triumph: a 3-1 win over Algeria in November.
However, injury has kept him sidelined over recent months, causing concern for supporters of both club and country. Mikel, though, has vowed to do everything within his power to be fit for this vital upcoming double-header.
"I had maintained good form until this injury," he said. "So it was a shame. But this is part of the game and now I am focusing on recovery and on coming back stronger.
I will do whatever I can to get fit to play for Teda and my national team.
"This Nigeria team look up to me for advice. My team-mates miss me and they need me. As the captain, I want to fulfil my role and help them with my experience."
Mikel certainly has pedigree that few of his African peers can match.
He broke on to the scene at the 2005 FIFA U-20 World Cup, when he helped Nigeria march all the way to the final, where they were edged out by a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina.
Mikel was however named the second most valuable player of that tournament behind Messi.
In the senior ranks, he helped Nigeria to the 2013 African Cup of Nations title and, more recently, starred for the Super Eagles at Brazil 2014, where they reached the second round for the first time since 1998.
At club level, he won just about everything on offer during a glittering 11-year spell with Chelsea, departing Stamford Bridge having claimed a UEFA Champions League title, two English Premier League crowns and four FA Cups.
Such achievements, however, merely serve to whet his appetite for more.
“I am glad with what I have done,” he said. “But at the same time, I am not satisfied. I want to achieve more, so I must push harder.
The next World Cup in Russia will be a fresh chance for us but, first, we have to make it there.
Then the next challenge will be to make sure we enjoy an even better tournament in Russia than we did in Brazil.”

LIVERPOOL HAVE LANDED NABY KEITA IN A CLUB RECORD DEAL.
Liverpool have finally landed Naby Keita in a club record deal - but he won’t join until next summer.
The Guinea star has been at Melwood undergoing a medical and the Reds are delighted to have landed their top summer target.
Leipzig caved in to Liverpool’s summer-long campaign to land Keita when they accepted that they could not hang on to the player beyond this season.
They rejected a £66million offer from the Reds to sign him this summer and faced losing him for £48million next year when his release clause came into affect.
The Bundesliga club decided to act now to maximise the fee for Keita and to give themselves 12 months to find his replacement.
Their hand was also forced because the midfielder has set his heart on a move to Anfield.
CHELSEA HAVE AGREED A £35m FEE FOR ARSENAL'S ALEX OXLADE-CHAMBERLAIN.
Chelsea have agreed a £35m fee with Arsenal for Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The deal now looks set to go ahead before Thursday’s transfer deadline as Chelsea moved quickly after facing stiff competition from Liverpool.
Oxlade-Chamberlain, 24, has turned down a new contract at Arsenal, only has a year left and they wanted to sell now rather than lose him for free next summer.
Oxlade-Chamberlain is due to report for England duty this week but is now expected to hold talks and thrash out personal terms in the next 24 hours.
The wide man is expected to undergo a medical at St George's Park this week ahead of World Cup qualifiers with Malta and Slovakia.
When asked after the Gunners' 4-0 defeat at Liverpool on Sunday about Oxlade-Chamberlain, Wenger said: "That is the kind of question I cannot answer after a game like that.
"I think we are focused on the game. We will be focused on the transfer marker in the next three of four days. What will happen, I don’t know."
Oxlade-Chamberlain joined the Gunners from Southampton for £15m in 2011.
Chelsea have already signed Willy Caballero, Antonio Rudiger, Tiemoue Bakayoko and Alvaro Morata this summer.

MAYWEATHER PARTIES AT HIS OWN STRIP CLUB TO CELEBRATE HIS VICTORY OVER CONOR MCGREGOR.
Floyd Mayweather drove himself to his own strip club in a deluxe convertible to celebrate his victory over Conor McGregor reports the Mirror.
The now 50-0 boxing legend began his retirement in a brand new red Bugatti, in which he rocked up to Girl Collection.
Not needing a chauffeur after doing battle in the ring, the 40-year-old enjoyed the custom wheels with red leather seats.
It took Mayweather until the 10th round of the richest fight of all time to end the slim hopes of the dual-weight UFC champion.
Mayweather insists his career as a boxer is over - definitely - after having come out of retirement for this money-spinning event.
Mayweather is set to pocket an estimated £230million from the fight in total and appears to have treated himself to a new set of wheels.
The shindig, which cost punters $500 a head, is being held at the club recently purchased by Mayweather - who is a regular visitor.
While Conor McGregor dressed sharply and partied heartily with his devoted fans, Mayweather was more subdued in a simple white T-shirt.
A large crowd gathered outside, spilling into the street, as the night's hero partied for two hours.
He talked about his post-fight plans last week on the Jimmy Kimmel show.
"The after party's going to be at my strip club," he said.
"We have a collection of the prettiest girls from around the world.
"The last time I had a lap dance was 20 years ago.
I don’t have to get a dance because I own a strip club."
"I got into the business because breasts, vaginas, music and alcohol will never go out of style."
There's be not rest in retirement though, apparently, for Mayweather.
He is scheduled to play basketball tomorrow.
Journalist Arash Markazi said on Twitter: "Floyd Mayweather is planning to arrive at his strip club around 3 a.m. tonight before playing in a charity basketball game tomorrow at UNLV."
Gallant loser McGregor was given a hero's welcome by more than 2,000 fans at a sold-out after-fight party at Encore Beach Club on the Las Vegas Strip.
It would have been easy to think he'd won the fight as the 29-year-old donned a blue floral suit and sunglasses for the party, which he attended from about 3am.
McGregor draped himself in the Irish tricolour flag while a photo without sunglasses shows his black eye but otherwise little sign of his 10-round clash.
Mayweather, on the other hand, barely appeared to have a scratch on him after delivering masterclass from the fourth round onwards in tactical boxing.
PSG HAVE REACHED AGREEMENT WITH MONACO FOR MBAPPE AND FABINHO.
Paris Saint-Germain have concluded an agreement with AS Monaco to sign Kylian Mbappe and Fabinho from the Ligue 1 champions reports the daily record.
According to sources familiar with the negotiations, Mbappe's ultimate transfer-fee cost to PSG will exceed the world-record €222m sum required to activate Neymar's release clause at Barcelona.
A percentage of Mbappe's fee will be contingent on performance-related variables.
PSG improved the financial terms on offer to both Mbappe, who is expected to be remunerated with a basic after-tax salary of around €9m, and father Wilfried, who represented his son in the negotiations.
Mbappe has played just one full campaign of senior professional football, delivering 26 goals from 44 appearances as Monaco took the Ligue 1 title away from PSG and reached the semi-final of the Champions League, a competition in which the striker scored six times. Called into the France national squad for the first time in March, the 18-year-old also made his international debut last season.
The highest profile of a list of extremely talented youngsters recruited for Monaco by former technical director Luis Campos, Mbappe cost the principality club €3m and was on a weekly wage of €34,600.
His sale to PSG ensures that Monaco will have raised more money from transfer fees in a single window than any club ever, with Bernardo Silva, Benjamin Mendy and Tiemoue Bakayoko all sold to English Premier League clubs in the most prominent of the French champions' earlier sales.
Fabinho's exit allows Monaco to open up a place in its squad list for a non-EU player, while fulfilling the principality club's promise to the versatile Brazilian that he would be allowed to leave Monaco this summer.
The 23-year-old, who has excelled at Champions League level at both right back and in the centre of midfield, had been on a list of potential recruits drawn up by Old Trafford manager Jose Mourinho.
Dendoncker had attracted a degree of interest from Everton and United and was wanted by Atletico Madrid. Valued at around €35m by Anderlecht, the 1m88 midfielder did not train with the Belgian Pro League champions on Friday.

USAIN BOLT ASKED SIR FERGUSON TO SIGN HIM UP FOR MAN UTD.
Usain Bolt didn't get the farewell from athletics he wanted this summer - but he is already planning a back up career.
The massive Manchester United supporting Jamaican turned up at Old Trafford to watch his favourites clash take on Leicester just two weeks after hanging up his running spikes.
Before the match, Bolt bumped into United legends Sir Alex Ferguson and Sir Bobby Charlton for a couple of photos reports the Mirror.
And while talking to 13-time Premier League winning manager Ferguson he asked to be handed a trial to prove his worth in Jose Mourinho's squad.
It is unknown whether his request was granted, but Bolt has already been spotted lifting both the Europa League and the EFL Cup - the two trophies Mourinho's men managed to pick up last season.
The eight-time Olympic gold medalist then took his place in the stands to watch his beloved club face the Foxes.
Bolt, who has previously training with the Red Devils, told MUTV: "I would have loved to play for United.
"I was saying to Fergie to pull a few strings and get me a trial.
"It was fun when Alex was in charge I went down."
Bolt was due to play for United's legend side to face Barcelona next month.
But after damaging his hamstring during his last ever race - the 4x100m relay at the London Stadium where he pulled up on the final straight - he was forced to pull out.
He revealed he faced three months of rehabilitation to fix a hamstring tear.
"MY TEAM IS SOLID"; MOURINHO DECLARES.
Marcus Rashford and Marouane Fellaini came off the bench to score in the 2-0 win over Leicester which maintained their 100 per cent start to the Premier League campaign.
United are top of the table after scoring 10 goals and conceding none in their opening three matches.
"I think we played very well," he told BT Sport.
"There is a difference in the quality of our football. We have played better.
"The team is playing very well, very confident, great football.
I like my team very much. Three matches, nine points, is nothing new for us because last season was three matches and nine points.
"If I have to choose a word to describe my team, i would have to say “solid”.
"The players are good and motivated. They are on the bench waiting for a chance.
"We can look into perspective, last season we won against Leicester at home so that doesn’t make a difference but we had too many draws at home last season."
Rashford always had the belief Manchester United would convert their chances.
United missed plenty of opportunities during the first 70 minutes, with summer signing Romelu Lukaku also seeing a penalty saved, but Rashford and Fellaini found the net after entering proceedings.
"We created a lot of chances in the first half and at the start it seemed like it was going to be one of those days," Rashford said.
"The whole team stuck to the task well and, fortunately, we got the goal.
"When the chances are coming, I am always confident the goals will come. It was just a matter of when.
Luck comes into play, but if we are playing the way we are the chances will come.
