WHY MOURINHO FINDS IT DIFFICULT TO PLAY MARTIAL AND RASHFORD TOGETHER.

Jose Mourinho has admitted he struggles to fit Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial in the same Manchester United side.

The pair both started in Saturday's 4-1 victory over Newcastle - but it is only the 12th time they have taken to the field together.

Martial equalised for United and Rashford set up Paul Pogba's second-half strike after a tweak in formation.

Mourinho also admitted that both players prefer to attack from the left.

Here are his thoughts;

ON MARTIAL AND RASHFORD
Mourinho said:

"They both like to play in the same position and that is difficult."
"They both prefer to play on the left than the right, both playing with another striker through the middle, we lose a point of contact with the midfield that we are used to, with the player playing behind the striker.

"But we found then a certain balance and when they start finding, sometimes both, one opening the left and one on the mid-left between the striker and the left winger, it was the moment where we start creating more.

ON THE EFFECT OF FIELDING BOTH MARTIAL AND RASHFORD AGAINST NEWCASTLE ON SATURDAY
Mourinho said:

"But to be honest Newcastle was probably the team, not in the second-half, but in the first-half which come here and we felt a bit of instability in our defensive areas, and that was clearly not because of the defensive players but because of our balance.

"So to play them [Martial and Rashford] together gives us things but also takes some things from us."

ON HIS WILD CELEBRATIONS AFTER LUKAKU SCORED THE 4TH GOAL
Mourinho said:

"He's a striker and strikers like to score goals."
"It's not a problem for me if he works like he always does, and he doesn't score goals but for their self-esteem and self-confidence strikers want to score goals and he wasn't doing that for a few matches, and I know that can affect a striker's confidence.
"So I was really happy that he scored that goal."
