RONALDO'S BODY IS WONDERFUL BUT HE SHOULD BE A ROLE MODEL; SAYS EX REFEREE.

Ronaldo was slapped with a five-game ban for the combination of his red card against Barcelona in the Spanish Super Cup and his petulant push of the match official.

The Real Madrid winger was given his second yellow card for an alleged dive minutes after taking his shirt off as part of a goal celebration.

However, ex- Premier League referee Graham Poll has claimed Ronaldo should have been banned for 12 games.

Spanish FA rules state that Ronaldo could have been suspended for up to 12 matches - and Poll says that is exactly what he should have been given.

"He has got away lightly with a five-match ban for assaulting match official Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea," Poll said in his Daily Mail column.

"Rather than appeal against the second yellow (as is permitted in Spain, but thankfully not in England), Madrid's management should tell Ronaldo to stop collecting cautions for removing his shirt.

Yes, we all know he looks wonderful, but we don't need reminding every week."

Poll is concerned about the long-term impression that Ronaldo's actions could have on young football fans around the world.

He added: "Youngsters all over the world watch and copy Ronaldo. Such a high-profile player must be shown that he needs to be a good role model."

The European Champions are preparing for their Spanish Super Cup second-leg on Wednesday before their La Liga opener on Sunday.

Ronaldo's ban means that he misses the second leg of the Spanish Super Cup this week, while he is unavailable for the first four La Liga games this season.
