PETER CROUCH EARNS A SPOT IN THE GUINNESS BOOK OF RECORDS
Stoke striker Peter Crouch has earned a spot in the Guinness World Records 2018 annual, with the book recognising his record tally of 51 headed goals in the Premier League.
The former Liverpool man headed his first goal in the Premier League in 2001 for Aston Villa, and moved past Alan Shearer's total of 46 headers during his side's famous 6-1 drubbing of the Reds in Steven Gerrard's final appearance for the club.
He has since notched another five goals with his head to take his running total to 51, earning him a place in the yearly collection of world records.
"It feels good! To hold any record, certainly in the Premier League, is great. I’m very proud of it" said Crouch, who broke another record when he became the oldest man to score 100 top flight goals when he netted for the Potters against Everton back in February.
Crouch has continued to score goals at the highest level, despite acknowledging that he is a more old fashioned centre forward compared to the more skilled international stars seen in the Premier League every week.
He said: “I see centre forwards hanging around outside the box and it blows my mind, I just can’t get my head around it” he says of the modern day forward.
“I believe, if you are a centre forward, you should be in the box, ready for the ball. That’s the way I have always played my game and that will never change.”
His form for the likes of Liverpool and Portsmouth saw him earn 42 caps for England and score 22 goals, but the last of those appearances came in 2010 and Crouch felt the curtain was brought down on his international career too soon.
He said: “I believe it ended too soon, but that’s football, it’s a game of opinions. I had a great run, I loved it.
I was part of every squad for five years in a period where I think we had our best team since ’66 and really should have won something.”
Crouch was talking ahead of the launch of Guinness World Records 2018, out now.
