SMALLING INCLUDES RASHFORD, BUT LEAVES RONALDO OUT OF HIS UNITED'S DREAM IX.

Manchester United defender Chris Smalling has picked his best XI of players he's lined up alongside for the club, which includes a number of surprising decisions.

The 27-year-old has played with a whole host of big name stars since moving to Old Trafford from Fulham in 2010, but some of them missed the cut as he named his dream team on the official club website.

When previously asked to select his best Red Devils team Smalling included himself, but there was no place in the side for him this time.

His first big decision was whether to go with Sergio Romero, David de Gea or Edwin van der Sar, after ruling out Romero he chose De Gea as he described him as 'the world's best.'

Interestingly Smalling chose Antonio Valencia at right back over former club captain Gary Neville who played in that position for 19 years winning two Champions League trophies and eight league titles.

He explained his decision: "Right backs have changed a lot but I'm going to go with Antonio when I first joined he was a right midfielder but he has made that right back position his own over the last few years and I don't feel there's any player who's going to beat him in a one v one dual."

Patrice Evra was Smalling's pick at left and in the middle he went with Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand.

He said: "When I signed both were in their prime and I got to train with them and play with both and learn a lot from them."

In midfield there's been plenty of options to go with over the past six years but Smalling went for a midfield four of Paul Scholes, Michael Carrick, Ryan Giggs and Paul Pogba.

Upfront Smalling chose Wayne Rooney and more surprisingly was the inclusion of Marcus Rashford.

He explained his decision: "There's obviously a lot more experienced strikers that I have played with but I think the impact he has had since he joined and come the end of the career he will be known as one of the greats."

Smalling's XI (4-1-2-1-2):
David De Gea
Antonio Valencia
Nemanja Vidic
Rio Ferdinand
Patrice Evra
Michael Carrick
Paul Scholes
Ryan Giggs
Paul Pogba
Wayne Rooney
Marcus Rashford.
