DAVID BECKHAM IS GRATEFUL TO THE MAN THAT HELPED HIM BECOME A GLOBAL STAR.

Beckham says that he owes “everything” to the legendary 1966 World Cup winner who put him on the path to becoming a global superstar.

The former England midfielder made over 550 career appearances while representing some of the world’s largest clubs including Manchester United, Real Madrid, AC Milan and PSG.

But there is one memory of being a young boy which sticks in his mind when he re-assesses his career.

"I went to the Bobby Charlton soccer school and ended up winning the competition,” Beckham said.

“Sir Bobby contacted Manchester United and said ‘maybe you should have a look out for this young kid’ and that’s how my career with United started – with Sir Bobby."

Beckham was speaking as part of a BBC One documentary which celebrates Sir Bobby’s 80th birthday tomorrow.

That fond childhood memory of meeting his hero led to a glittering career which spanned over 20 years - and he is incredibly grateful.

"I owe everything to Sir Bobby because, if not, maybe I wouldn’t have had the chance of living my dream of playing for the club that I’d supported,” he added.

"He has always been about being successful, but even more so about helping other people. That’s what’s so special about him - he’s respected on the field, but even more so off the field.
